Building disaster resilient communities is an all-inclusive task. When we work in cooperation together we expedite recovery, alleviate suffering, empower those impacted and build a strong and resilient Iowa. The IDHRC is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit, Charitable Organization and is a member of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD). The IDHRC also serves as the state's Citizen Corps Council. Our Mission To coordinate a holistic approach to disaster recovery by maximizing public and private resources, thereby providing an efficient system that can address immediate and long-term physical, spiritual and emotional needs of impacted citizens. The IDHRC is working to: Communicate the most up-to-date information by working closely with all partners - federal, state, and local government, and nonprofit and faith-based organizations. Collaborate with local community and faith-based organizations to connect those with needs to others who can provide resources Coordinate the resources of the membership of the IDHRC Cooperate with all partners to assist in every way to help Iowans with their disaster-caused needs LOCAL DISASTER RECOVERY sites have been established to provide additional information: Fremont County Harrison County Mills County Pottawattamie County Scott County IOWA INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE GRANT PROGRAM AND IOWA DISASTER CASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Governor Reynolds has activated the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and Iowa Disaster Case Management Program in the following counties. There is no income limit for this program. Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated area can begin applying for federal Individual Assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 TTY. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time), seven days a week, until further notice. VOLUNTEERING Do not self deploy - Seeing images of disaster may compel you to head to the impacted area. Don’t underestimate the complexity of working in a disaster area. Until a need has been identified and the local community impacted has requested support, volunteers should not enter. Wait until it is safe to travel to volunteer sites and opportunities have been identified. Affiliate with Existing Organizations - Immediately following a disaster, a community can become easily overwhelmed by the amount of generous people who want to help. Contacting and affiliating with an established organization will help to ensure that you are appropriately trained and supported to respond in the most effective way. Be patient. Recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention. There will be volunteer needs for many months, often years, after the disaster – especially when the community enters the long-term recovery period.
